How Local Businesses Get Found by Search and AI
People search in different ways. Some type a service into Google. Others ask an AI tool a question like "best tile shop near me" or "who does the best Italian food photography in Chicago." For a local business, the goal is the same either way: help the right person understand what you do and take the next step.
Start With a Clear Website
Your website is still the foundation. Explain your services, the areas you serve, and who each service is for. If you offer several services, make it obvious which one applies to which customer, rather than lumping everything into one vague page.
Make your contact details easy to find. A customer or an AI tool summarizing your site shouldn't have to dig for a phone number, address, or contact form. Use real project examples and photos where you can. Answer the questions customers actually ask before choosing you, such as pricing ranges, turnaround times, or what a typical project looks like.
Build Content Around Customer Needs
A service page should help someone decide whether you are a good fit, not just rank for a keyword. Structure each page around the practical questions a customer has in mind:
- What does the process look like?
- What's included, and what isn't?
- How do I get started?
- What makes this business different from the alternative down the street?
Avoid adding pages just to repeat a keyword. Thin pages that exist only for SEO tend to perform worse, both for traditional search rankings and for AI tools trying to summarize what you actually do.
Keep Your Business Information Consistent
Your website and your business listings (Google Business Profile, Yelp, industry directories) should agree on your name, contact details, services, and service area. Inconsistent information confuses both search engines and AI systems trying to verify who you are.
For businesses with a physical location, accurate hours and location information are especially important. A customer who shows up to a storefront that's closed, or an AI answer that gives the wrong hours, costs you trust as well as business.
Treat AI Search as Part of Your Search Presence
AEO means answer engine optimization, and GEO means generative engine optimization. These terms describe overlapping approaches to making information easier to discover and use in AI-generated answers, whether that's a chatbot, a voice assistant, or a search engine's AI summary.
The good news: clear, useful content and sound SEO fundamentals remain a sensible starting point for both. Structured, well-organized pages that directly answer common questions tend to perform well across traditional search and AI tools alike. That said, there is no guaranteed placement in an AI answer. Treat AEO and GEO as an extension of good content practices, not a separate system to game.
Measure What Matters to the Business
Traffic is only one signal, and on its own it doesn't tell you much. Track relevant inquiries and the actions people take after reaching your site: form submissions, calls, booking requests, or time spent on key pages. Use that information to decide which pages and topics deserve more attention, and which ones aren't pulling their weight.
